Hello Haskell STEAM Families!

My name is Connie Covert and I am the new principal here at Haskell, now a full STEAM Magnet beginning this 2016-2017 school year!

I come to you most recently from Millikan Middle School Performing Arts Magnet and Science Academy STEM School where I coordinated the arts, Gifted and Talented, and magnet programs.  Before that, I was the K12 Arts Coordinator for LAUSD where, among many things, I helped write the Media Arts Standards for the school district. Coming to a STEAM school is a dream come true for me, and I look forward to the many wonderful learning experiences we will have  within the whole Haskell community.

Our Magnet provides the same LAUSD curriculum as any elementary school, but deepens learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and math – hence the acronym “STEAM.” Becoming a STEAM school means that we’ll be engaging students in developing their own original ideas and focusing on having them test them out. As they become more comfortable presenting their thoughts and working through their designs with “trial and error,” it is hoped students will begin expressing their ideas and what they’ve learned through art or engineered projects. Our students will be prepared to enter their middle and senior high schools college or career aware; fully prepared to problem solve or create using the habits of mind from  STEAM education.  Ultimately, we want our students to culminate from Haskell STEAM Magnet continuing to seek out learning that helps them participate ethically as global citizens, successfully meeting the demands of a 21st century workforce.

 

We are now a full, “continuous enrollment” Magnet. This means all students, grades 1-5, must apply for our school through the district’s ECHOICES process, with first priority granted to residential students.  This provides all district students in Grades 1-5 access to a thriving STEAM elementary school without reducing the enrollment opportunity of our neighborhood students.

As a result of our new standing as a full STEAM magnet, Haskell has begun several projects of interest.

  •       In Science, Haskell has teamed with four other elementary schools and CSUN in a two-year, half-million dollar grant to support 4th and 5th grade teachers as they learn to implement the new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
  •       In Technology, students and teachers are learning to use various apps on their tablet devices to enhance the curriculum.
  •       In Engineering, teams of students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will continue to use Project-Based Learning skills (PBL) to build and program robots to perform multiple tasks.  We came in second place at the Rally in the Valley event held at CSUN last May 2016.
  •       In the Arts, we are continuing to receive the district’s Elementary Arts Program, but are beginning conversations to expand our arts instruction so that all students are able to learn about the elements of design and communication.
  •       In Math, our students are receiving rigorous instruction using My Math and Engage New York, and we will begin looking at ancillary projects to participate in, such as MATH COUNTS and a Pi Day celebration.

While each of these content areas, events, and projects has its own plan and curriculum, they are all interdependent upon each other. This requires lots of external effort to support the work of our inspiring teachers within the classrooms.  We will need many parent volunteers to help us enliven our learning environment.

I look forward to meeting each and every one of you as we figure out how deep our work can go and how magnificent our kids can be.
